Introduction
Christ the king is above all. We must fear Him above all. Jesus must go to Jerusalem and He must die there and it is according to His will. We hear the lament of God here.. One of the most powerful statements of Christs deity.
Oh Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen [gathers] her brood under [her] wings, but you were not willing!
1 – How shocking the nature of sin is V33
Journey to Jerusalem meant getting closer to God. This journey here though meant death and separation from God. Death to the messiah of God.
This is an example of the shocking nature of our sin in all men. Not just Jews but all men. It is a suicidal tendency of men to kill God and by doing so killing oneself.
1 Thessalonians 2:14-15 (NKJV) 14 For you, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus. For you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, just as they [did] from the Judeans, 15 who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they do not please God and are contrary to all men,
Were it not for Gods saving grace we would all reject Him. Every last human being.
2 – How great the compassion of the Lord is towards sinners V34
This passage shows the compassion of God. Deuteronomy 32:10, Psalm 57:1, Psalm 91:1-4
God is sovereign Ephesians 1:11 . Here in V34 it sounds like they had a choice. Isaiah 46:9. God expresses grief here. It genuinely grieves God. Expressed will, will of command, not His decree will.
The sovereignty of God does not remove mans responsibility and It does not remove our responsibility to preach the Gospel to all people.
My notes(delete) Isaiah 43 – Christ has a people.
3 – How dangerous the rejection if the gospel is. V34-35
A shocking truth. A statement of judgment here. How dangerous is the rejection of Jesus Christ.
Here Jesus is saying He will abandon them and their house will be desolated. It should have been a way to God but they killed the prophets and made their sons twice the sons of hell then they were. No wonder Christ laments. They heard the gospel so often yet rejected it. This is a warning to all the world. Repent and believe. Hebrews 10:26-27
Hebrews 10:26-27 (NKJV) 26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.
Luke 13:31-35 (NKJV) 31 On that very day some Pharisees came, saying to Him, “Get out and depart from here, for Herod wants to kill You.” 32 And He said to them, “Go, tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third [day] I shall be perfected.’ 33 “Nevertheless I must journey today, tomorrow, and the [day] following; for it cannot be that a prophet should perish outside of Jerusalem. 34 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen [gathers] her brood under [her] wings, but you were not willing! 35 “See! Your house is left to you desolate; and assuredly, I say to you, you shall not see Me until [the time] comes when you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’ ”
