The Heidelberg Catechism
The Heidelberg Catechism – 1563 The Heidelberg Catechism was written in Heidelberg at the request of Elector Frederick III, ruler of the most influential German province, the Palatinate, from 1559 to 1576. This pious Christian prince commissioned Zacharius Ursinus, twenty-eight years of age and professor of theology at the Heidelberg University, and Caspar Olevianus, twenty-six years old and Frederick‟s court preacher, to prepare a catechism for instructing the youth and for guiding pastors and teachers. Frederick obtained the advice and cooperation of the entire theological faculty in the preparation of the Catechism. The Heidelberg Catechism was adopted by a Synod in Heidelberg and published in German with a preface by Frederick III, dated January 19, 1563. A second and third German edition, each with some small additions, as well as a Latin translation were published in
Heidelberg in the same year. The Catechism was soon divided into fifty-two sections so that a section of the Catechism could be explained to the churches in preaching each Sunday of the year.

Heidelberg Catechism Lords Day 14 – 36. Q. HOW DOES THE HOLY CONCEPTION AND BIRTH OF CHRIST BENEFIT YOU?
A. He is our mediator,1 and with his innocence and perfect holiness he removes from God”s sight my sin-mine since I was conceived.2 1 1 Tim. 2:5-6; Heb. 9:13-15

2 Rom. 8:3-4; 2 Cor. 5:21; Gal. 4:4-5; 1 Pet. 1:18-19
Heidelberg Catechism Lords Day 15 – 37. Q. WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND BY THE WORD “SUFFERED”?
A. That during his whole life on earth, but especially at the end, Christ sustained in body and soul the anger of God against the sin of the whole human race.1 This he did in order that, by his suffering as the only atoning sacrifice,2 he might set us free, body and soul, from eternal condemnation,3 and gain for us God”s grace, righteousness, and eternal life.4

Heidelberg Catechism Lords Day 15 – 38. Q. WHY DID HE SUFFER “UNDER PONTIUS PILATE” AS JUDGE?
A. So that he, though innocent, might be condemned by a civil judge,1 and so free us from the severe judgment of God that was to fall on us.2

Heidelberg Catechism Lords Day 15 – 39. Q. IS IT SIGNIFICANT THAT HE WAS “CRUCIFIED” INSTEAD OF DYING SOME OTHER WAY?
A. Yes. This death convinces me that he shouldered the curse which lay on me, since death by crucifixion was accursed by God.1
Biblical References:
1 Gal. 3:10-13 (Deut. 21:23)
Heidelberg Catechism Lords Day 16 – 40. Q. WHY DID CHRIST HAVE TO GO ALL THE WAY TO DEATH?
A. Because God”s justice and truth demand it:1 only the death of God”s Son could pay for our sin.2
