Father… Forgive Us our sins. For also we forgive all who owe us

Verse 4 is our focus today. Forgive us our sins for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. Past present and future sins are forgiven. To sincerely pray this prayer is to be forgiven. The throne of God is the throne of grace. Verse 4 is asking for forgiveness daily. Why pray that if we are forgiven? Forgiveness from a judicial perspective and the other practical pardon. Our sins are legally pardoned.(justification) positional. Practical is about our daily walk with Him. Our relationship with Him pleasing the Father. 1 John 1:9 is an on going prayer.

Forgiving one another: V4 – For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
1. Forgiveness restored brotherly relationships – v20, v23 -God wants His children living in harmony. He will not accept your worship when you are fighting with a brother. Heb 12:14
2. Forgiveness releases from toxic bitterness. Forgiveness is self therapeutic. Forgiveness removes bitterness.
3. Forgiveness releases others from destructive sorrow. 2 Cor 2:7
4. Forgiveness keeps you from satanic advantages Eph 4:26 – 2 Cor 2:10
5. Forgiveness resembles Gods forgiveness. God has forgiven us we should be motivated to forgive Eph 4:32 . any offense against you cannot compare with our offense against Christ. Remember the suffering the innocent one did for you. Remember you sinned. He forgave you.
6. Forgiveness reciprocates your forgiveness – Matthew 6:14 – the connection and relationship with God and our brothers and sisters is dependent on us forgiving others. The practical pardon. We don’t cease to be children but it will effect our relationship with the Lord. Psalm 51 restore to me the joy of your salvation. If we aren’t forgiving we cannot pray this prayer. We must forgive from the very start of the day and the whole day. God forgives by grace. This is not teaching salvation by works. We can’t control the other person but we can still forgive them. We must have an attitude of repentance . Luke 17:3-4 – if they repent forgive them. Luke 6:37-38 reciprocal. Mat 5:7 – 1 Pet 3:7, Mat 18:21-22 Mat 18:23-28. We cannot pay our debt of sin. God has forgiven all of our debt. 1 Peter 4:8

Matthew 18:21-22 (NKJV) 21 Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.

1 Peter 3:7 (NKJV) Husbands, likewise, dwell with [them] with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as [being] heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.

Matthew 5:7 (NKJV) Blessed [are] the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy.

Luke 6:37-38 (NKJV) 37 “Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”

Luke 17:3-4 (NKJV) 3 “Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. 4 “And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.”

2 Corinthians 5:19 (NKJV) that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

Matthew 6:14 (NKJV) “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

Ephesians 4:32 (NKJV) And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

2 Corinthians 2:11 (NKJV) lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.

Ephesians 4:26 (NKJV) “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,

2 Corinthians 2:7-8 (NKJV) 7 so that, on the contrary, you [ought] rather to forgive and comfort [him,] lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow. 8 Therefore I urge you to reaffirm [your] love to him.

Hebrews 12:14-15 (NKJV) 14 Pursue peace with all [people,] and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled;

Luke 11:1-4 (NKJV) 1 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, [that] one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” 2 So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as [it is] in heaven. 3 Give us day by day our daily bread. 4 And forgive us our sins, For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.”
