Introduction:
Hope in the future was essential in the old testament. They were a people taught to look to the future.
One error: Interpreting the old testament apart from the new testament.
Another error: evaluating old testament revelation against new testament revelation. The New Testament reveals more. It interprets the old testament. In the OT it was dim until Christ, the final profit came. Col 1:26-27 you cannot read it and understand it without the NT.
Another error: different people with a different future. It’s one plan, one savior. The OT is not teaching another plan. We have the final revelation.
The coming one: John the baptist asked Jesus “are you the coming one” Gen 49:10
Deut 18:15, Psalm 110:4 the coming one is a priest forever. A final king to come. Jer 23:5, Zac 9:9
The coming kingdom: if would eternal and glorious. Isa 9:6 – there will be no end. Daniel 2
Daniel 2:44 (NKJV) “And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.
Daniel 7:17-18 (NKJV) 17 ‘Those great beasts, which are four, [are] four kings [which] arise out of the earth. 18 ‘But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom, and possess the kingdom forever, even forever and ever.’
Daniel 7:27 (NKJV) Then the kingdom and dominion, And the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven, Shall be given to the people, the saints of the Most High. His kingdom [is] an everlasting kingdom, And all dominions shall serve and obey Him.’
The coming of the Spirit:
Acts 1:6-8 (NKJV) 6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. 8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Joel 2:28-29 was fulfilled in Acts 2:17, Ezekiel 36,37, Zac 11:10, Isa 44:3, Hebrews 1-2 in these last days.
Isaiah 44:3-8 (NKJV) 3 For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, And floods on the dry ground; I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, And My blessing on your offspring; 4 They will spring up among the grass Like willows by the watercourses.’ 5 One will say, ‘I [am] the LORD’s’; Another will call [himself] by the name of Jacob; Another will write [with] his hand, ‘The LORD’s,’ And name [himself] by the name of Israel. 6 “Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel, And his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: ‘I [am] the First and I [am] the Last; Besides Me [there is] no God. 7 And who can proclaim as I do? Then let him declare it and set it in order for Me, Since I appointed the ancient people. And the things that are coming and shall come, Let them show these to them. 8 Do not fear, nor be afraid; Have I not told you from that time, and declared [it?] You [are] My witnesses. Is there a God besides Me? Indeed [there is] no other Rock; I know not [one.]’ ”
