Introduction

A sure comfort in life and death but it is found only in Jesus Christ.

  • Our sin and misery
  • Our deliverance
  • And being thankful

Misery – all the painful consequences of the fall. The authors of the catechism knew we had to reveal our sin and revealing our need for Christ.

This is personal and comforting. It is not the Word of God but helps us study the Word of God. The authors wanted it to be an echo of scripture. It was written in Germany. First translated 1563 into German. It is the most translated book after the Bible. Still used today among many reformed and presbyterian churches today..

Lords Day 1
Q. What is your only comfort in life and in death?
A. That I am not my own, but belong – body and soul, in life and in death – to my faithful saviour Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with His precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven; in fact, all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to Him, Christ, by His Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me whole-heartedly willing and ready from now on to live for Him.Matthew 10:29-31; Luke 21:16-18; John 6:39,40; John 8:34-36; John 10:27-30; Romans 8:1-17,28; Romans 14:7-9; 1 Corinthians 3:23; 1 Corinthians 6:19,20; 2 Corinthians 1:21,22; 2 Corinthians 5:5; Ephesians 1:13,14; 2 Thessalonians 3:3; Titus 2:14; Hebrews 2:14,15; 1 Peter 1:18,19; 1 Peter 1:5; 1 John 1:7-9; 1 John 2:2; 1 John 3:1-11.
